What is the Safe Routes to School Movement?

Safe Routes to School (SRtS) is a national movement  to increase the number of students walking and biking to school safely.

Through a collaborative community effort, SRtS programs typically address:

  • the safety of our streets and communities
  • the health and fitness of our children
  • traffic congestion
  • air quality and other environmental issues

Successful programs typically include:

  • Families: children, parents, guardians, neighbors, and extended family

  • Schools: teachers, PTAs, administrators, staff
  • Health Professionals: public health, school nurses, clinicians
  • Design Professionals: engineers, planners, artists and other designers

  • Public Safety Professionals: fire fighters, law enforcement, crossing guards

Find out why Safe Routes to School programs are important.

“These are my kids; I don’t want to see one of them gone tomorrow just because I didn’t step up and do something about it.”
