Walk & Roll Wednesdays at Sanislo

Go! Project update

Sanislo Elementary School Celebrates Safe Routes to School Month in May!

As part of an ongoing SR2S program entitled The Go! Project, Sanislo Elementary School has invited all of its students to become frequent "Walkers & Rollers" this May.  Students have punch cards to keep track of their progress, which they will turn in at the end of the month to qualify for a prize drawing.

To help families participate, even if they live far away, the school invites parents to meet at one of 3 nearby locations on Walk & Roll Wednesdays.  Every Wednesday morning in May, walking groups will convene near the local police station and 2 area parks.  Each date has a unique theme:

  • Wednesday, May 6th:  Giant Chicken Day
  • Wednesday, May 13th: Camera Day
  • Wednesday, May 20th: Eye-Spy Scavenger Hunt Day
  • Wednesday, May 27th: Trash Pick-Up Day

Walk & Roll Wednesdays is the culminating encouragement campaign for the Go! Project, which is a comprehensive SR2S program funded through the Washington State Department of Transportation.  Activities at Sanislo have included:

  • Engineering!  A new sidewalk was placed near the school, in part by grant funds as well as City funds through Bridging the Gap. The City of Seattle also adopted the outdoor stairway that leads to the school grounds, improving lighting and landscaping to make it safer and more pleasant for pedestrians.
  • Enforcement!  The neighborhood police precinct provided overtime hours for officers to conduct speed emphasis patrols and accompany us at our events.
  • Encouragement and Education!  Additional walk-to-school campaigns have been a hallmark of the Go! Project.

Sanislo was just one of three partner schools in the Go! Project.  West Seattle Elementary School and Denny Middle School, both situated nearby, adapted program elements to suit their school populations.
