Statistics Behind Safe Routes to School

Vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, and public safety statistics.

Improving the health and safety of our children requires that we make it safe for them to walk and bicycle in our communities. Families' perception that our communities are not as safe as they used to be has partly led to the decline in the numbers of children walking and biking to school over the last 30 years.

The safety statistics below provide information to change perceptions and make the case for Safe Routes to School in your community.

“My main goal is to keep these children safe, and I try to help everyone start their day off right. A big smile and a wave mean a lot to people who are so rushed in the morning."

-- Peggy Tonnema, Crossing Guard
